Early Days
Instagram, one of the most popular social media platforms, was first launched on October 6, 2010, by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Initially, the app was called Burbn, a location-based app that allowed users to share photos, as well as make plans and meet with friends.
- In 2010, Systrom and Krieger began working on a new app that would focus solely on photo-sharing.
- The app was later renamed Instagram, a combination of the words 'instant' and 'telegram'.
Rise to Fame
Instagram quickly gained popularity after its launch, with over 1 million users signing up within the first two months.
The app's popularity continued to grow, and in April 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram for approximately $1 billion.
